What does ANSI stand for?
ANSI stands for the American National Standards Institute. From the organizational website, ANSI is a not-for-profit that is dedicated to supporting the U.S. voluntary standards and conformity assessment system and strengthening its impact, both domestically and internationally.
What are the ANSI safety colors and what do they mean?
ANSI safety colors are outlined by ANSI Z535 series. This ANSI Z535 series is a comprehensive collection of standards set by the American Safety Standards Institute to guide the design, evaluation and use of safety signs, colors and symbols intended to prevent personal injury by visually alerting people to potential hazards.
- RED (PMS485): Danger, Flammable, Fire Protection
- ORANGE (PMS144): Warning
- YELLOW (PMS109): Caution
- GREEN (PMS341): Safety or First Aid Information
- BLUE (PMS2935): Notice or Information
What are the components of the ANSI format?
- Safety Header or Signal Word: This header and corresponding signal word communicates the degree or seriousness of the hazard. It provides the reader with the seriousness of the potential hazard. ie: danger, warning, caution, notice or instruction
- Safety Symbols: Safety symbols communicate the hazard or other information through the use of a pictogram. This is designed to communicate the message quickly, across all language barriers.
- Legend or Message: The legend or message should communicate the hazard or situation that the label is alerting the end user to.
