UKCA Marking Regulatory Release

With over 30 years of experience in regulatory labeling, the team at Tailored Label Products has been through our fair share of new and changing requirements that impact product labeling.

Appropriate markings are mandatory for many markets, each with potentially different and unique compliance standards.

Labeling changes may be implemented locally or globally depending on the regulatory enforcement panel.

TLP has long supplied CE labels to manufacturers selling products in the European Union (EU) market. However, now that the United Kingdom has separated from the EU, new regulatory marks have emerged.

“The UKCA (UK Conformity Assessed) marking is a new UK product marking used for goods being placed on the market in Great Britain (England, Wales and Scotland). It covers most goods which previously required the CE marking.”

The UKCA mark, similar to the CE mark, will show product conformity to specified safety standards.

Exception: The newly introduced UKCA mark cannot be used for goods in Northern Ireland. Here, another newly introduced mark, the UKNI mark, is now required.

The CE marking will continue to be recognized for products in the markets of the remaining 27 EU countries.

Important Dates:

• January 1, 2021: UKCA/NI mark comes into force. In many cases, combination labels are allowed for a one-year grace period. In some cases, the switch from CE must be immediate.
• January 1, 2022: Full UKCA/NI enforcement. CE no longer recognized in applicable markets.
